The formation of updates for the CentOS 8.x distribution has been discontinued, replaced by the continuously updated version CentOS Stream. On January 31, related content for the CentOS 8 branch is planned to be removed from mirrors and moved to the archive at vault.centos.org.
CentOS Stream is positioned as an upstream project for RHEL, allowing third-party participants to oversee package preparation for RHEL, suggest their changes, and influence decision-making. Previously, a snapshot of one of the Fedora releases was used as a basis for the new RHEL branch, which was refined and stabilized behind closed doors, without the ability to oversee the development process and decisions made. In the development of RHEL 9 based on the Fedora 34 snapshot, the CentOS Stream 9 branch has been formed with community involvement, where preparatory work is conducted and a foundation for a new significant RHEL branch is established.
The same updates prepared for the yet-to-be-released future interim release of RHEL are published for CentOS Stream, with the main goal of the developers being to achieve a level of stability for CentOS Stream that is identical to RHEL. Before a package enters CentOS Stream, it undergoes various automated and manual testing systems, and is published only if its stability level meets the quality standards for packages ready for publication in RHEL. Simultaneously with CentOS Stream, prepared updates are placed in the nightly builds of RHEL.
Users are advised to migrate to CentOS Stream 8 by installing the centos-release-stream package (ādnf install centos-release-streamā) and running the command ādnf updateā. Alternatively, users can also switch to distributions that have continued the development of the CentOS 8 branch:
- AlmaLinux (migration script),
- Rocky Linux (migration script),
- VzLinux (migration script)
- Oracle Linux (migration script).
Additionally, Red Hat has provided a way (migration script) for free use of RHEL in organizations that develop open-source software and in environments of individual developers with up to 16 virtual or physical systems.
