The release of the GNU Binutils 2.38 system utility set has been announced, which includes programs such as the GNU linker, GNU assembler, nm, objdump, strings, and strip.
In the new version:
- Support for the LoongArch architecture, used in Loongson processors, has been added to the assembler and linker.
- The assembler has added the option ‘—multibyte-handling=[allow|warn|warn-sym-only]’ to choose the method for handling multibyte characters. When ‘warn’ is specified, a warning is issued for multibyte characters in the source texts, and ‘warn-sym-only’ will warn when multibyte characters are used in argument names.
- Improved support for AArch64 and ARM architectures has been made in the assembler, with expanded support for system registers and the addition of support for the SME (Scalable Matrix Extension), as well as support for Cortex-R52+, Cortex-A510, Cortex-A710, Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710 processors, along with the architectural extensions ‘v8.7-a’, ‘v8.8-a’, ‘v9-a’, ‘v9.1-a’, ‘armv9.2-a’, and ‘armv9.3-a’.
- Support for Intel AVX512_FP16 instructions has been added to the assembler for the x86 architecture.
- The linker has received the following options: ‘-z pack-relative-relocs/-z nopack-relative-relocs’ for controlling the packing of relative address relocations in the DT_RELR section; ‘-z indirect-extern-access/-z noindirect-extern-access’ for managing the use of canonical function pointers and copying relocation address information; ‘—max-cache-size=SIZE’ to define a maximum cache size.
- The elfedit utility has added the option ‘—output-abiversion’ for updating the ABIVERSION field in ELF files.
- The readelf, strings, nm, and objdump utilities have added the ‘—unicode’ option for managing the handling of unicode characters when outputting symbolic names or strings. When ‘—unicode=locale’ is specified, unicode strings are handled according to the current locale; ‘—unicode=hex’ displays them as hexadecimal codes; ‘—unicode=escape’ shows them as escape sequences; and ‘—unicode=highlight’ displays them as highlighted escape sequences in red.
- In the readelf utility, the option ‘-r’ now produces a dump of data about relative relocations.
- Support for the platforms efi-app-aarch64, efi-rtdrv-aarch64, and efi-bsdrv-aarch64 has been added to objcopy, enabling the use of this utility for developing components for UEFI.
- The ar utility has added the option ‘—thin’ for creating thin archives that contain only symbol and reference tables.
