Oracle has introduced Solaris 11.4 CBE (Common Build Environment), a new free version of the Solaris 11.4 operating system aimed at open-source developers and personal use. Unlike the previously offered core builds of Solaris 11.4, which allowed free use for testing, development, and personal projects under their licenses, the new edition features a continuous release model for new versions and is similar to the Solaris 11.4 SRU (Support Repository Update) edition.
The use of CBE will simplify access to current versions of software and updates for those who wish to use Solaris for free. In fact, CBE builds can be viewed as beta versions and are akin to the early test builds of Solaris 11.4 SRU, which include newer software versions and fixes for accumulated bugs available at the time of release (the CBE build does not include all fixes offered in a similar SRU build release, as it is formed earlier, but any fixes not included in the release are accumulated and provided in the next release).
To use CBE, one is advised to install the standard Oracle Solaris 11.4.0 build, connect to the pkg.oracle.com/solaris/release repository in IPS, and update it to the CBE version by executing the command "pkg update." Separate ISO images are not yet available, but they are promised to be published on the main Solaris download page. It is expected that, like SRU releases, new CBE builds will be published monthly. The code for the open components of Solaris is available in the repository on GitHub, and individual packages can be downloaded from pkg.oracle.com.
