The release of Chrome OS 99 is now available, based on the Linux kernel, using the upstart system manager, ebuild/portage build tools, open components, and web browser Chrome 99. The user environment of Chrome OS is limited to the web browser, and instead of standard applications, web applications are used; however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop, and taskbar. The Chrome OS 99 build is available for most current models of Chromebook. The source code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 open license. Additionally, testing of Chrome OS Flex, a version of Chrome OS for use on regular computers, continues. Enthusiasts are also creating unofficial builds for standard computers with x86, x86_64, and ARM processors.
Key changes in Chrome OS 99:
- In the Nearby Share feature, which enables fast and secure file transfers to nearby devices running the Chrome browser, background device scanning has been implemented. Background scanning allows detecting devices ready for data transfer and notifies the user of their presence, enabling the transfer to start without switching to device discovery mode.
- The ability to return to full-screen mode for applications after unlocking the device has been added. Previously, when returning from sleep mode, full-screen applications would switch back to windowed mode, which hindered normal use with virtualized desktops.
- The Files file manager is now delivered as a SWA (System Web App) application instead of a Chrome App. The functionality remains unchanged.
- Optimizations have been made for touch screen controls, and multitouch gesture handling has been improved.
- In the Overview mode, the ability to move windows with the mouse to a new virtual desktop, which is created automatically.
- The camera app has added the ability to record videos in the form of animated GIFs. The size of such videos cannot exceed 5 seconds.
- Vulnerabilities have been fixed: authentication issues in the VPN-client, accessing already freed memory in the window manager, Nearby Share, ChromeVox, and the printing interface.
