Two years after the last release, an alternative version of the Linux Mint distribution has been launched — Linux Mint Debian Edition 5, based on the Debian package base (the classic Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu package base). In addition to using the Debian package base, an important distinction of LMDE from Linux Mint is its continuous package update cycle (continuous updating model: partial rolling release, semi-rolling release), where package updates are released constantly, allowing users to access the latest versions of software at any time.
The distribution is available in the form of installation ISO images with the Cinnamon desktop environment. LMDE includes most of the improvements from the classic Linux Mint 20.3 release, including original project developments (update manager, configurators, menu, interface, system GUI applications). The distribution is fully compatible with Debian GNU/Linux 11 but is not package compatible with Ubuntu and classic Linux Mint releases.
LMDE is aimed at more technically proficient users and provides newer package versions. The goal of developing LMDE is to ensure that Linux Mint can continue to exist in the same way even if Ubuntu development ceases. Additionally, LMDE helps to verify that the applications developed by the project function properly in systems different from Ubuntu.
