The release of Parrot 5.0 is now available, based on the Debian 11 package base and includes a suite of tools for system security auditing, forensic analysis, and reverse engineering. Several ISO images with the MATE environment are offered for everyday use, security testing, installation on Raspberry Pi 4 boards, and creating specialized setups, such as those intended for cloud environments.
The Parrot distribution is positioned as a portable laboratory for security experts and forensic analysts, focusing on tools for testing cloud systems and Internet of Things devices. It also includes cryptographic tools and programs for secure internet access, including TOR, I2P, anonsurf, gpg, tccf, zulucrypt, veracrypt, truecrypt, and luks.
In the new release:
- Transitioned to using packages from the stable branch of Debian 11, instead of the previously used Debian Testing package base.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.16 (up from 5.10).
- The generation of builds with KDE and Xfce desktops has been discontinued, and the graphical environment now only comes with the MATE desktop.
- An experimental build for Raspberry Pi boards has been introduced.
- New utilities for system security testing have been added: Pocsuite3, Ivy-optiv, Python3-pcodedmp, Mimipenguin, Ffuf, Oletools, findmyhash 2.0, Dirsearch, Pyinstxtractor.
