After seven months of development, the release of the console file manager Midnight Commander 4.8.28 has been published, distributed in source code under the GPLv3+ license.
List of major changes:
- The built-in support for the SMB protocol has been removed, as its implementation was significantly outdated, incomplete, and had security issues.
- Syntax highlighting for Ngspice/SPICE and DOT/Graphviz files has been implemented in the built-in editor.
- The mcview viewer has added support for macros for file and directory substitutions defined in the mc.ect file.
- File name highlighting in the panels has been added for formats such as avif, jp2, jxl, heic, heif, psb, psd, and Markdown.
- The issue causing slowdowns when moving a large number of files has been resolved.
