The developers of the Gentoo project have announced the resumption of Live builds, allowing users not only to evaluate the state of the project and demonstrate the distribution's capabilities without the need to install it on their hard drives, but also to use the environment as a portable workstation or a tool for system administrators. Live builds will be updated weekly to provide access to the latest versions of applications. The builds are available for the amd64 architecture, have a size of 4.7 GB, and are suitable for installation on DVD and USB drives.
The user environment is built on the KDE Plasma desktop and includes a wide selection of both applications and tools for system administrators and specialists. For example, it includes:
- Office applications: LibreOffice, LyX, TeXstudio, XournalPP, kile;
- Browsers: Firefox, Chromium;
- Chats: irssi, weechat;
- Text editors: Emacs, vim, kate, nano, joe;
- Developer packages: git, subversion, gcc, Python, Perl;
- Graphics work: Inkscape, Gimp, Povray, Luminance HDR, Digikam;
- Video editing: KDEnlive;
- Disk utilities: hddtemp, testdisk, hdparm, nvme-cli, gparted, partimage, btrfs-progs, ddrescue, dosfstools, e2fsprogs, zfs;
- Network utilities: nmap, tcpdump, traceroute, minicom, pptpclient, bind-tools, cifs-utils, nfs-utils, ftp, chrony, ntp, openssh, rdesktop, openfortivpn, openvpn, tor;
- Backup: mt-st, fsarchiver;
- Performance measurement packages: bonnie, bonnie++, dbench, iozone, stress, tiobench.
To give the environment a recognizable appearance among users, a competition has been launched for the development of a visual style, themes, boot animations, and desktop wallpapers. The design should identify the Gentoo project and may include the distribution's logo or existing design elements. The work must ensure a cohesive design, be distributed under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, be suitable for use in various screen resolutions, and be adapted for inclusion in the live image.
