The Linux kernel developers' mailing list has noted issues with the maintenance of the new NTFS file system implementation, released by Paragon Software and included in the Linux kernel 5.15. One of the conditions for incorporating the new NTFS code into the kernel was to ensure ongoing maintenance of the code within the kernel, but since November 24 of last year, any activity in the development of the open NTFS3 codebase has ceased, the appointed maintainer is out of contact, bug reports are being ignored, and submitted patches are not being considered for inclusion.
There is also a specific attitude from the NTFS3 maintainers towards submitted fixes that has resulted in a loss of communication—patches were either silently applied to the codebase without prior review or ignored without any explanations. Attempts by a developer interested in the development of NTFS3 to discuss the situation in private correspondence, as well as an offer to assist in maintenance and take on some responsibilities, went unanswered. The intentions of the head of Paragon Software to open additional tools for NTFS have so far remained only promises.
Regarding further actions in the situation, if maintenance is not restored, it is proposed to move NTFS3 to the category of orphaned modules and remove the driver from the kernel to avoid creating the illusion of support for NTFS, effectively delivering an unfinished unmaintained implementation with unresolved bugs.
