Lars Knoll, the creator of the KHTML engine developed for KDE, which formed the basis for the browsers Safari and Chrome, has announced his departure from the position of Technical Director at Qt Company and Lead Maintainer of Qt after 25 years in the ecosystem. According to Lars, after his departure, the project will remain in reliable hands and will continue to develop according to the same principles. His motivation for leaving includes a desire to try working on something other than the Qt framework, which he has been involved with since his student days.
His new workplace will be a startup created with one of the founders of Trolltech. Details about the new project have not yet been provided, but it is mentioned that it is not related to the C++ programming language or development tools. Until the end of June, Lars will continue to work on Qt at the same pace, but then he will switch to the new project and will devote noticeably less time to Qt, though he will not leave the community entirely, remaining available in newsletters and ready to consult other developers.
In addition to his position as Technical Director of Qt Company, Lars has also announced his departure as the Lead of the Qt project. However, he will continue to maintain the Qt Multimedia module, for which he is willing to devote several hours of his time each week. Volker Hilsheimer has been proposed as the new lead for Qt, who works full-time with Qt, knows all the technical details, has connections in the Qt Company, is respected among developers, and supports the development of Qt as an open project. Volker holds the position of director at Qt Company, overseeing research and development (R&D), graphics, and user interface.
