The release of the Deepin 20.6 distribution has been published, based on the Debian 10 package base but developing its own Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) and around 40 custom applications, including the music player DMusic, video player DMovie, messaging system DTalk, installer, and Deepin Software Center. The project is developed by a group of developers from China but has transformed into an international project. The distribution supports the Russian language. All developments are distributed under the GPLv3 license. The size of the bootable ISO image is 3 GB (amd64).
Desktop components and applications are developed using C/C++ (Qt5) and Go. A key feature of the Deepin desktop is the panel, which supports several operating modes. In the classic mode, there is a more explicit separation of open windows and suggested applications to launch, and the system tray area is displayed. The efficient mode somewhat resembles Unity, mixing indicators of running programs, favorite applications, and control applets (volume/brightness settings, connected drives, clock, network status, etc.). The program launcher interface is fullscreen and provides two modes — viewing favorite applications and navigating through the catalog of installed programs.
Key innovations:
- The application manager has added support for filtering and classifying search results, separating the found applications for Linux, Windows, and Android platforms.
- The web browser has added settings and tools for automatic session data cleanup. Encrypted storage of cookies is enabled by default.
- The disk utility has added support for managing logical volumes.
- During the installation on disk, the option to select the size of the root partition has been provided.
- The information search interface (Grand Search) now supports splitting the display of found files based on modification time and the directory of the file, which can be useful when searching for files with the same name.
- The accuracy and speed of the optical character recognition (OCR) application have been improved.
- The file manager's interface for moving files in drag & drop mode has been optimized.
- The calendar-scheduler has added settings for reminders 15 minutes, 1 hour, 4 hours, and the next day. Support for defining custom event types has been provided.
- The camera application has added support for encoding using Gstreamer.
- The email client has implemented support for adding accounts and managing emails using the Exchange protocol. A calendar has been added. Scaling of image previews in the body of the email has been ensured.
- The drawing program Draw has added support for JPEG, PBM, PGM, PPM, XBM, and XPM formats.
- The voice note-taking program has added the option to select the font for text.
- The text editor has enhanced the accuracy of encoding detection.
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.15.34, with the NTFS3 filesystem support module enabled by default.
- New network drivers for rtw89 and bcm adapters have been added, ported from kernel 5.17.
- NVIDIA graphics drivers have been updated to the 510.x branch. A package with open NVIDIA drivers has been added to the repository.
- The Qt library has been updated to version 5.15.3. Firmware for graphics cards has been updated.
