After 6 months of development, the release of the Cinnamon 5.4 user environment has been formed, during which the Linux Mint distribution community develops a fork of the GNOME Shell, the Nautilus file manager, and the Mutter window manager, aimed at providing an environment in the classic GNOME 2 style with the integration of successful interaction elements from GNOME Shell. Cinnamon is based on GNOME components, but these components are delivered as a periodically synchronized fork, independent of external dependencies on GNOME. The new release of Cinnamon will be offered in the Linux Mint 21 distribution, scheduled for release in July.
Key innovations:
- The Muffin window manager has been transitioned to a fresh codebase of the Metacity window manager, developed by the GNOME project. The project's JavaScript interpreter (GJS) has been updated. These changes required significant internal restructuring, which was the main focus during the preparation of the new branch.

- In the sound management applet, the microphone mute button is hidden if the microphone is not in use.
- To configure Bluetooth connections, an interface based on Blueman, a GTK application using the Bluez stack, is proposed instead of Blueberry, an extension of GNOME Bluetooth.
