The FreeDesktop community-supported development infrastructure based on the GitLab platform (gitlab.freedesktop.org) has been unavailable due to the failure of two SSDs in the distributed storage based on the Ceph file system. No predictions can be made at this time regarding whether it will be possible to restore all relevant data for GitLab's internal services (mirrors were working for git repositories, but the data related to error tracking and code review may be partially lost).
The attempts to restore the storage for the Kubernetes cluster were unsuccessful on the first try, after which the administrators went to sleep to continue the recovery with fresh minds. Work is currently limited to the intention of bringing up the storage using the capabilities of the Ceph file system to provide fault tolerance and store redundant data with replication across different nodes. The discussion has not yet covered the existence and relevance of individual backups.
The FreeDesktop project transitioned to GitLab as its main platform for collaborative development in 2018, using it not only for access to repositories but also for bug tracking, code review, documentation preparation, and testing in continuous integration systems. Repository mirrors remain available on GitHub.
The Freedesktop.org infrastructure serves over 1200 repositories of open projects. As the primary platform, GitLab hosts servers projects such as Mesa, Wayland, X.Org Server, D-Bus, Pipewire, PulseAudio, GStreamer, NetworkManager, libinput, PolKit, and FreeType. The systemd project is formally associated with FreeDesktop but uses GitHub as its primary development platform. For accepting changes in the LibreOffice project, which also partially utilizes the FreeDesktop infrastructure, a different server system based on Gerrit.
