The release of EndeavourOS 22.6 'Atlantis' is available, replacing the Antergos distribution, which was discontinued in May 2019 due to a lack of free time among the remaining maintainers to support the project adequately. The installation image size is 1.8 GB (x86_64, with a separate ARM build in development).
Endeavour OS allows users to install Arch Linux with the required desktop environment without unnecessary complications, in the form as envisioned by the developers of the chosen desktop, without additional pre-installed programs. The distribution offers a simple installer for setting up the base Arch Linux environment with Xfce as the default desktop and the option to install one of the standard desktop environments from the repository, including Mate, LXQt, Cinnamon, KDE Plasma, GNOME, Budgie, as well as tiling window managers like i3, BSPWM, and Sway. Work is underway to add support for the Qtile and Openbox window managers, and the UKUI, LXDE, and Deepin desktop environments. Additionally, one of the project developers is working on a custom window manager, Worm.
In the new release:
- The separately developed build for the ARM architecture has improved the installation process. A new installer based on the Calamares framework has been proposed. The new installer is currently in beta testing and is available only for Odroid N2/N2+ and Raspberry PI devices.
- Work has been done to enhance the update of core packages for ARM and x86_64 builds, as well as to maintain the repositories for ARM and x86_64 in a synchronized state. The ARM build is expected to become a main release in the near future.
- Package versions have been updated, including the Linux kernel 5.18.5, Calamares installer 3.2.60, Firefox 101.0.1, Mesa 22.1.2, Xorg-Server 21.1.3, and nvidia-dkms 515.48.07.
- The WirePlumber session manager has been involved for configuring sound devices and managing the routing of audio streams instead of pipewire-media-session.
- In configurations with custom environments Xfce4 and i3, the firewall-applet auto-launch is disabled by default.
- The ability to roll back packages to older versions has been provided.
- The installation of Xfce in offline mode has been redesigned.
- The budgie-control-center configurator has been added to the repository for use with the Budgie desktop environment.
