The release of the Live distribution Porteus 5.0 has been published, built on Slackware Linux 15 package base, and offering builds with user environments Xfce, Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, LXDE, LXQt, MATE, and OpenBox. The distribution's structure is designed for minimal resource consumption, allowing Porteus to run on outdated hardware. Notable features include high boot speed. Compact Live images, around 350 MB in size, are available for i586 and x86_64 architectures.
Additional applications are distributed in the form of modules. A custom package manager, PPM (Porteus Package Manager), manages the packages, handling dependencies and allowing installation of programs from Porteus, Slackware, and Slackbuilds.org repositories. The interface is designed to be usable on devices with small screen resolutions. Configuration is done through the Porteus Settings Centre. The distribution boots from a compressed FS image, but all changes made during operation (browser history, bookmarks, downloaded files, etc.) can be separately saved to a USB drive or hard disk. In ‘Always Fresh’ mode, changes are not saved.
In the new version, synchronization with Slackware 15.0 has been implemented, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.18, and the BusyBox utility set in initrd has been updated to version 1.35. The number of available builds has increased to 8. To reduce the image size, components for Perl language support have been moved to the external module 05-devel. Support for package managers slackpkg and slpkg has been added. The toolkit for creating bootloaders now includes support for installation on NMVe drives.
