The developers of the Ubuntu MATE distribution, built on the Ubuntu package base and offering a desktop environment based on the MATE project, announced the creation of builds for Raspberry Pi boards. The builds are based on the Ubuntu MATE 22.04 release and are prepared for both 32-bit and 64-bit Raspberry Pi boards.
Key features include:
- Enabling the zswap mechanism and the lz4 algorithm by default for compressing information in the swap area.
- Providing KMS drivers for the VideoCore 4 GPU, as well as a v3d driver for the VideoCore VI graphics accelerator.
- Activating the compositing window manager by default.
- Optimizing the composition of the boot image.
Additionally, it is worth noting the developers' intention to provide official support for builds for the Raspberry Pi 4 boards in the Fedora Linux distribution. Until now, Raspberry Pi 4 boards were not officially supported by the project due to the lack of open drivers for the graphics accelerator. With the inclusion of the v3d driver in the kernel and Mesa, the issue with the lack of drivers for VideoCore VI has been resolved, so there is nothing preventing the implementation of official support for these boards in Fedora 37.
