After a year of development, the release of Live Distribution NST 36 (Network Security Toolkit) has been published, designed for network security analysis and monitoring its functioning. The size of the bootable ISO image (x86_64) is 4.1 GB. A special repository has been prepared for Fedora Linux users, allowing the installation of all tools developed within the NST project on an already installed system. The distribution is based on Fedora 36 and allows the installation of additional packages from external repositories compatible with Fedora Linux.
The distribution includes a comprehensive collection of applications related to network security (for example: Wireshark, NTop, Nessus, Snort, NMap, Kismet, TcpTrack, Etherape, nsttracroute, Ettercap, etc.). A special web interface has been prepared to manage the security auditing process and automate the invocation of various utilities, which also integrates a web frontend for the Wireshark network analyzer. The graphical environment of the distribution is based on FluxBox.
In the new release:
- The package base is synchronized with Fedora 36. The Linux kernel version 5.18 is being used. The applications included have been updated to the latest releases.
- Access to the vulnerability scanners OpenVAS (Open Vulnerability Assessment Scanner) and Greenbone GVM (Greenbone Vulnerability Management) has been revamped, which now run in a separate container based on podman.
- The outdated sidebar navigation menu has been removed from the NST WUI web interface.
- In the web interface for ARP scanning, a column has been added with data on RTT (Round Trip Time), and the number of available operations has been expanded.
- The IPv4, IPv6, and hostname settings widget now includes the option to select a network adapter.
