The release of the NsCDE 2.2 project (Not so Common Desktop Environment) has been published, which develops a desktop environment with a retro interface in the style of CDE (Common Desktop Environment), adapted for use on modern Unix-like systems and Linux. The environment is based on the FVWM window manager with themes, applications, patches, and extensions to recreate the original CDE desktop. The project code is released under the GPLv3 license. The extensions are written in Python and Shell. Installation packages have been created for Fedora, openSUSE, Debian, and Ubuntu.
The aim of the project is to provide a comfortable and convenient environment for retro-style enthusiasts, supporting modern technologies without discomfort due to a lack of functionality. To give running user applications a CDE style, theme generators for Xt, Xaw, Motif, GTK2, GTK3, and Qt5 have been prepared, allowing most X11 applications to be styled with a retro interface. NsCDE enables the combination of CDE styling with modern technologies such as font rasterization using XFT, Unicode, dynamic and functional menus, virtual desktops, applets, desktop wallpapers, theme/icon styling, and more.
In the new version:
- The option to place the panel at the top of the screen has been implemented (enabled by adding 'InfoStoreAdd frontpanel.on.top 1' to the file ~/.NsCDE/NsCDE.conf).
- A color scheme has been added for the kcalc calculator, corresponding to the dtcalc design.
- The icon design has been updated.
- Support for styling Firefox 100+ has been added. CSS files have been updated to customize Firefox's appearance.
- CSS files for GTK2 and GTK3 engines have been merged.
- Keyboard shortcuts that comply with the CUA (Common User Access) specification have been implemented and are enabled by default. To revert to the old keyboard shortcuts, the setting 'InfoStoreAdd kbd_bind_set nscde1x' should be placed in the file ~/.NsCDE/NsCDE.conf or changes should be made in the Keyboard Style Manager interface.
- PolkitAgent detection has been improved.
- In the Kvantum theme engine, which can be selected in the Color Style Manager settings, a style closer to Motif for Qt5 lists has been implemented.
