The release of the Toybox system utility set 0.8.8 has been published, similar to BusyBox, presented as a single executable file and optimized for minimal system resource consumption. The project is developed by a former BusyBox maintainer and is distributed under the 0BSD license. The main purpose of Toybox is to provide manufacturers with the opportunity to use a minimalist set of standard utilities without disclosing the source codes of the modified components. Currently, Toybox's capabilities lag behind BusyBox, but 306 basic commands (227 fully and 79 partially) out of 378 planned have already been implemented.
New features in Toybox 0.8.8 include:
- The 'timeout' utility has been enhanced with the '-i' option to terminate a command after a specified period of inactivity (output to standard stream resets the timer).
- The 'tar' utility now supports the '--xform' option for file name transformations using a given sed expression. The command 'tar --null' has been implemented.
- Short alternatives for long options have been introduced (for example, 'ls --col' for 'ls --color').
- Support for output formats 'full', 'value', and 'export' has been added to the 'blkid -o' command.
- The 'nsenter' utility has gained the '-C' option (enable cgroup namespace) and the '-a' option (enable all supported namespaces).
- The 'mount' utility now includes the '-R' option, and recursive bind mounting is enabled by default.
- The 'file' utility can now recognize files containing Linux kernel images and executable files for the Loongarch architecture.
