Cloudflare has released the source code of its modified version of the PgBouncer proxy server, used to maintain a pool of open connections to the PostgreSQL database management system. PgBouncer allows applications to connect to PostgreSQL through already established connections to avoid the constant execution of resource-intensive operations related to opening and closing connections, thus reducing the number of active connections to PostgreSQL.
The changes proposed in the fork aim for stricter isolation of resources at the level of individual databases (CPU usage, memory consumption, and I/O intensity) and to enforce connection limits tied to users and connection pools. For instance, the published fork includes functionality to limit the size of the connection pool for each user, which works correctly in configurations with host-based authentication (HBA). Additionally, support for dynamically adjusting the connection limits per user has been added, allowing for more flexible management of users sending multiple resource-intensive requests.
