The IEEE Spectrum magazine, published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), has released a new edition of its programming language popularity ranking. Python remains the leader of the ranking, followed closely by C, C++, and C#. Compared to last year's ranking, Java dropped from 2nd to 5th place. There was a strengthening of positions for C# (up from 6th to 4th place) and SQL (previously not in the top ten, now secured 6th place).
In terms of job offers, SQL leads, followed by Java, Python, JavaScript, C#, C, and C++.
In the ranking that considers the interest in programming languages on forums and social networks, Python leads, followed by Java, C, JavaScript, C++, C#, and SQL. The Rust language is in 12th place overall, while it ranks 20th in the general ranking, and 22nd in employer interest ranking.
The IEEE Spectrum ranking is based on a combination of 12 metrics obtained from 10 different sources. The method is based on analyzing search result outcomes for the term "{language_name} programming" on various sites. It considers the number of materials found in Google's search results (similar to the TIOBE ranking), search query popularity parameters through Google Trends (as in the PYPL ranking), mentions on Twitter, the number of new and active repositories on GitHub, the number of questions on Stack Overflow, publications on Reddit and Hacker News, job listings on CareerBuilder and IEEE Job Site, and mentions in the digital archive of journal articles and conference papers (IEEE Xplore).

- In the August TIOBE Software ranking, Python moved from 2nd to 1st place, while C and Java shifted to 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. Among the changes over the year, the rise in popularity of languages like Assembly (up from 9th to 8th), SQL (from 10th to 9th), Swift (from 16th to 11th), Go (from 18th to 15th), Object Pascal (from 22nd to 13th), and Objective-C (from 23rd to 14th) is noted. The popularity of PHP (from 8th to 10th), R (from 14th to 16th), Ruby (from 15th to 18th), and Fortran (from 13th to 19th) has declined. The Kotlin language has entered the Top 30 list. The TIOBE popularity index makes its conclusions based on the analysis of search query statistics in systems such as Google, Google Blogs, Wikipedia, YouTube, QQ, Sohu, Amazon, and Baidu.
- In the August PYPL ranking, which uses Google Trends, the top three have not changed over the year: Python remains in first place, followed by Java and JavaScript. Rust has risen from 17th to 13th place, TypeScript from 10th to 8th, and Swift from 11th to 9th. Compared to August last year, the popularity of Go, Dart, Ada, Lua, and Julia has also increased. The popularity of Objective-C, Visual Basic, Perl, Groovy, Kotlin, and Matlab has declined.
- In the RedMonk ranking, based on popularity assessment on GitHub and discussion activity on Stack Overflow, the top ten languages are as follows: JavaScript, Python, Java, PHP, C#, CSS, C++, TypeScript, Ruby, and C. Notable changes over the year include C++ dropping from fifth to seventh place.
