The release of the Nmap 7.93 network security scanner is now available, intended for conducting network audits and identifying active network services. The release commemorates the 25th anniversary of the project. Over the years, the project has transformed from a conceptual port scanner published in 1997 in Phrack magazine into a fully functional application for analyzing network security and identifying the server applications in use. This release mainly includes fixes and improvements aimed at increasing stability and addressing known issues before work begins on the significantly different Nmap 8.
Key Changes:
- The Npcap library, used for packet capture and injection on the Windows platform, has been updated to version 1.71. This library is developed by the Nmap project as a replacement for WinPcap, built using the modern Windows API NDIS 6 LWF, and demonstrates higher performance, security, and reliability.
- A build with OpenSSL 3.0 has been provided, free from calls to functions declared deprecated in the new branch.
- Updated libraries include libssh2 1.10.0, zlib 1.2.12, Lua 5.3.6, and libpcap 1.10.1.
- In the NSE (Nmap Scripting Engine), which allows scripts to automate various actions with Nmap, exception and event handling has been improved, and returning unused pcap sockets has been streamlined.
- The capabilities of the NSE scripts dhcp-discover/broadcast-dhcp-discover (client identifier setting is now allowed), oracle-tns-version (added version detection for Oracle 19c+), and redis-info (issues with the display of inaccurate connection and cluster node information have been resolved) have been expanded.
- Signature databases for detecting network applications and operating systems have been updated. Deprecated CPE identifiers (Common Platform Enumeration) for IIS services have been replaced.
- Issues with routing data detection on FreeBSD have been resolved.
- Support for SOCKS5 proxies returning the binding address in the form of a hostname rather than an IPv4/IPv6 address has been added to Ncat.servers The issue with detecting network interfaces in Linux that are not bound to IPv4 addresses has been resolved.
