Peter Eckersley, one of the founders of the community-controlled non-profit certificate authority Let's Encrypt, which provides free certificates to anyone who wishes, has died. Peter was a board member of the non-profit organization ISRG (Internet Security Research Group), which is the founding body of the Let's Encrypt project, and he worked for a long time at the civil rights organization EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation). Peter's idea of ensuring encryption across the entire internet by providing free certificates to all websites seemed unrealizable to many, but the Let's Encrypt project has proven otherwise.
In addition to Let's Encrypt, Peter is known as the founder of many initiatives related to privacy, net neutrality, and artificial intelligence ethics, as well as for creating projects like Privacy Badger, Certbot, HTTPS Everywhere, SSL Observatory, and Panopticlick.
Last week, Peter was hospitalized and diagnosed with cancer. The tumor was removed, but Peter's condition deteriorated sharply due to complications arising after the surgery. On Friday night, despite resuscitation efforts, Peter passed away suddenly at the age of 43.
