In the first stage, daily test builds of Ubuntu Unity will be created and offered alongside the other official editions of the distribution (Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu, and UbuntuKylin). If no serious issues are identified, Ubuntu Unity will become one of the officially offered builds starting with the release of Ubuntu 22.10.
Previously, the Ubuntu Unity developer community demonstrated its competence by releasing several unofficial versions and meeting all requirements for official builds. The Unity desktop build will be integrated into the main Ubuntu build infrastructure, be distributed from official mirrors, adhere to the standard development cycle, and utilize testing and intermediate build services.
The Ubuntu Unity distribution offers a desktop based on the Unity 7 shell, which is built on the GTK library and optimized for efficient use of vertical space on laptops with widescreen displays. The Unity shell was included by default from Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 17.04. The codebase for Unity 7 had been abandoned for a long time after Ubuntu migrated to the Unity 8 shell in 2016, which was transitioned to the Qt5 library and the Mir display server, and returned to GNOME with the Ubuntu Dock panel in 2017. In 2020, the Ubuntu Unity distribution was created based on Unity 7 and development of the shell resumed.
