After eight months of development, a stable release of the Weston 11.0 compositing server has been published, advancing technologies that support full Wayland protocol support in Enlightenment, GNOME, KDE, and other desktop environments. The development of Weston aims to provide a high-quality codebase and working examples for using Wayland in desktop environments and embedded solutions, such as platforms for automotive infotainment systems, smartphones, televisions, and other consumer devices. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license.
The change in the significant version number of Weston is due to ABI changes that break compatibility. Changes in the new branch of Weston:
- Work on the color management infrastructure continues, allowing for color transformations, gamma corrections, and working with color profiles. This includes the addition of the ability to configure an ICC profile for the monitor and reflect colors from sRGB. Support for switching the monitor to HDR mode has also been introduced, but HDR content generation has not yet been implemented.
- Preparations have been made for implementing support for multiple backends running simultaneously in one of the next releases, for example, for output via KMS and RDP.
- A foundation has been established in the DRM backend for future support of configurations with multiple GPUs.
- Various improvements related to the RDP backend support for remote access to screen content have been made.
- The performance of the DRM backend has been enhanced.
- Support for the single-pixel-buffer protocol has been added, allowing for the creation of one-pixel buffers that include four 32-bit RGBA values. Using the viewporter protocol, the compositor server can scale one-pixel buffers to create uniform color surfaces of arbitrary size.
- The implementation of weston_buffer has been redesigned.
- The cms-static and cms-colord plugins have been deprecated.
- Support for multiple workspaces and scaling has been removed from desktop-shell.
- Support for the wl_shell protocol has been discontinued, which has been replaced by xdg-shell.
- The fbdev backend has been removed, and the KMS backend should be used instead.
- The components weston-launch, launcher-direct, weston-info, and weston-gears have been removed, with the libsea library and wayland-info to be used instead.
- The KMS max-bpc property has been set as the default.
- Crash handling has been provided for when the system runs out of free memory.
