The release of the UbuntuDDE 22.04 (Remix) distribution has been published, based on the Ubuntu 22.04 codebase and delivered with the DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment). This project is an unofficial edition of Ubuntu, but the developers are making efforts to include UbuntuDDE among the official editions of Ubuntu. The size of the ISO image is 3 GB.
UbuntuDDE offers the latest release of the Deepin desktop along with a set of specialized applications developed by the Deepin Linux project, including Deepin File Manager, DMusic music player, DMovie video player, and DTalk messaging system. Unlike Deepin Linux, it features a redesigned theme and replaces the Deepin application store with the Ubuntu Software Center, which supports packages in Snap and DEB format. Kwin, developed by the KDE project, is used as the window manager.
Notable changes in the new version include the transition to the Ubuntu 22.04 package base with Linux kernel 5.15, updates to the Deepin Desktop Environment and related packages, an upgrade to LibreOffice 7.3.6.2, and the inclusion of DDE Store and DDE Grand Search (activated by 'Shift + Space'), as well as a new stylistic design for the Calamares installer.
It should be noted that the components of the Deepin desktop are developed using C/C++ (Qt5) and Go. A key feature is the taskbar, which supports multiple operating modes. In classic mode, there is a clearer separation between open windows and suggested applications to launch, displaying the system tray area. The efficient mode somewhat resembles Unity, mixing indicators of running programs, favorite applications, and controls (volume/brightness settings, connected storage devices, clock, network status, etc.). The application launcher interface is displayed full-screen and provides two modes—viewing favorite applications and navigating through the catalog of installed programs.
