The developers of the OpenBSD project have introduced a new release of the version control system Got (Game of Trees), focusing primarily on simplicity of design and use. Got uses a storage system compatible with the disk format of Git repositories, allowing work with the repository using both Got and Git tools. For example, Git can perform tasks not implemented in Got. The code is distributed under the ISC open license.
The project aims to support the development of OpenBSD with a focus on the project's specificities. In particular, Got applies OpenBSD's accepted security policies (such as privilege separation and the use of pledge and unveil calls) and coding style. The toolkit is designed for a development process with a centralized repository and local branches for developers, external access via SSH, and email-based change reviews.
For version control, the got utility is offered with a familiar set of commands. To simplify usage, the utility supports only the minimally necessary set of commands and options sufficient to perform basic operations without unnecessary complications. For advanced operations, it is suggested to use the regular git. Repository management operations are handled by a separate utility, gotadmin, which performs tasks such as repository initialization, index packaging, and data cleaning. A web interface, gotweb, and the tog utility for interactive content viewing from the command line are provided for navigating data in the repository.
Among the changes in the new version, one can note the expanded field highlighting in the output of the tog utility, enhanced filtering options for commits when viewing the change log, the addition of built-in hints, the implementation of the command "gotadmin init -b " and displaying access mode in diff output for new files in the working tree.
