Microsoft has begun testing the Microsoft Edge Secure VPN service, integrated into the Edge browser. VPN is enabled for a small percentage of users in the experimental Edge Canary branch, but it can also be activated in the 'Settings > Privacy, search and services' section. The service is being developed in collaboration with Cloudflare, whose server infrastructure is used to create the data transmission network.
The proposed VPN hides the user's IP address, encrypts traffic, and routes requests through a separate isolated network. Among the limitations is the inability to choose a server in another country to bypass location-based blocks, as traffic is automatically routed through the nearest servers Cloudflare. Another feature is that the service is enabled by default, but it is applied depending on conditions and selected modes.
For managing VPN usage, several modes are offered, which remain active until the monthly traffic limit of 1 GB is reached (there are plans for a fee to increase the traffic limit in the future):
- ‘Optimized’, in which VPN is used when connected to an open Wi-Fi network, navigating through untrusted networks, or when accessing sites without encryption or a valid HTTPS certificate. However, VPN is not applied when viewing or transmitting video.
- ‘All sites’, implies constant VPN activation.
- ‘Selected sites’, allows VPN to be enabled only for specific user-chosen sites or to apply it for all sites except selected ones.
