The developers of the Rolling Rhino Remix distribution have announced the transformation of the project into a standalone distribution called Rhino Linux. The reason for creating this new product is the reevaluation of the goals and development model of the project, which has outgrown its amateur development status and is moving beyond simply repackaging Ubuntu. The new distribution will still be built on Ubuntu but will include additional utilities and will be developed by a team of several developers (two more participants have joined the effort).
A slightly modified version of Xfce will be proposed as the desktop environment. The main package manager will include Pacstall, positioned as the equivalent of the AUR (Arch User Repository) for Ubuntu, allowing third-party developers to distribute their packages without inclusion in the main repositories of the distribution. Through the repository implemented with Pacstall, components of the Xfce desktop, the Linux kernel, boot splash screens, and the Firefox browser will be distributed. As a basis for updates, devel branches of repositories will continue to be used, where packages with new versions of applications are built (synchronized with Debian Sid/Unstable) for experimental releases of Ubuntu.
