Valve has released VKD3D-Proton 2.7, a branch of the vkd3d codebase created to enhance Direct3D 12 support in the Proton game launching package. VKD3D-Proton incorporates Proton-specific changes, optimizations, and enhancements for better performance of Windows games based on Direct3D 12 that have not yet been included in the main vkd3d repository. Notably, it focuses on utilizing modern Vulkan extensions and the capabilities of recent graphics driver releases to achieve full compatibility with Direct3D 12.
In the new version:
- Driver requirements have been increased. Support for Vulkan extensions VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering, VK_EXT_extended_dynamic_state, VK_EXT_extended_dynamic_state2, and VK_KHR_maintenance4 is now mandatory, which are implemented in Mesa 22.0 and proprietary NVIDIA drivers 510.
- The new pipeline library introduced in the last release is adapted for any games, including those incorrectly using the D3D12 API, thanks to the implementation of an internal disk cache for representing SPIR-V generated from DXBC/DXIL.
- A series of optimizations aimed at reducing overhead and boosting GPU performance in scenarios such as depth pass rendering, the use of WriteBufferImmediate(), image processing, memory allocation for resources, and access to root descriptors have been made.
- Support for D3D12 features such as mesh shaders (VK_EXT_mesh_shader support required), shared resources, and fences has been added.
- DXR 1.1 support implementation continues.
- Initial support for HDR has been added.
- Numerous fixes related to DXIL support have been made.
- Improved compatibility with the Intel ANV driver.
- Debugging capabilities have been expanded.
- Stability has been improved when minimizing and switching between fullscreen games using Alt+Tab.
- Preparation for transitioning code from LGPL 2.1 to MIT license has been conducted.
- Issues in games such as Hitman 3, Redout 2, F1 2020, F1 2021, F1 2022, Guardians of the Galaxy, Halo Infinite, Spiderman Remastered, and Lost Judgment have been resolved.
