NTC IT RUSA has released a corrective release of the freely distributed and community-developed ROSA Fresh 12.3 distribution, built on the rosa2021.1 platform. Builds prepared for free download are designed for the x86_64 platform in versions with KDE Plasma 5, LXQt, GNOME, Xfce, and without a GUI. Users who already have the ROSA Fresh R12 distribution installed will receive the update automatically.
This release is notable for the addition of images with Xfce and a minimalist server image — the first server distribution based on the ROSA Fresh package base, alongside the previously available images with KDE 5, GNOME, and LXQt. The server build includes only the minimum set of components necessary for comfortable administrator work, and required packages, including FreeIPA and the Russian fork of nginx, Angie, with additional modules, can be installed from the repository.
Other features of the new version:
- The package base has been updated. The Linux kernel has been upgraded to version 5.15.75 (the previously supplied branch 5.10 continues to be supported).
- With the installer’s recommended disk layout (swap included), support for the zswap mechanism has been implemented, utilizing the zstd algorithm for compression, allowing for efficient operation on systems with limited RAM.
- Additional drivers for Bluetooth and Realtek WiFi support have been added to the images.
- The format of boot images has changed: a flash drive with a ROSA Linux image is now mounted by default, and its contents can be viewed in the file manager.
- Now, for each user environment, two images are available — standard (with support for both UEFI and BIOS but with an MBR partition table) and .uefi (also supporting both UEFI and BIOS but with a GPT partition table), allowing for installation on a wider range of computers.
- The default wait interval in the boot loader has been reduced, making system boot faster.
- In case the main mirrors for installing packages are unavailable, automatic switching to backup mirrors is provided.
- The images have been added with the rootcerts-russia package, containing certificates from the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia (this package can be removed without affecting system performance).
- The images include the command-line utility for automatic installation of NVIDIA video drivers, kroko-cli (a proprietary development, source code available).
- The console provides out-of-the-box support for Russian-language documentation based on termhelper (a proprietary development).
- In dnfdragora, 32-bit packages are hidden in the 64-bit images for user convenience.
- The rosa-update-system (a proprietary development) graphic update indicator has been added to the images. The dnfdragora update indicator is used in Xfce.
