After 6 years since the last release, the wattOS 12 Linux distribution is now available. It is based on the Debian package base and comes with the LXDE desktop environment and the PCManFM file manager. The distribution aims to be simple, fast, minimalist, and suitable for use on outdated hardware. The project was founded in 2008 and originally developed as a minimalist version of Ubuntu. The size of the installation ISO image is 1.2GB, supporting both live mode and installation on a hard drive.
In the new version:
- A new installer based on the Calamares toolkit has been introduced.
- The transition to Debian 11 package base has been completed (the previous release was based on Ubuntu 16.04) along with the Linux kernel 5.10.
- The desktop has been updated to LXDE 11.
- Support for Flatpak packages has been added.
- By default, contrib, non-free, and backports repositories are activated to obtain newer firmware and versions of software.
- To simplify package installation, the gdebi interface has been included.
- GParted is used for partitioning disks.
