Valve has released version 7.0-5 of the Proton project, which is based on the Wine codebase and aims to enable the launch of gaming applications developed for Windows and available in the Steam catalog on Linux. The project developments are distributed under the BSD license.
Proton allows for the direct launch of gaming applications in the Linux Steam client that are only supplied for Windows. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9/10/11 (based on the DXVK package) and DirectX 12 (based on vkd3d-proton), operating through the translation of DirectX calls into the Vulkan API, provides improved game controller support, and enables fullscreen mode regardless of the resolutions supported by the games. To enhance the performance of multithreaded games, support for mechanisms such as 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) and 'futex/fsync' is implemented.
