The developers of the openSUSE project have announced an increase in hardware requirements in the openSUSE Factory repository and the openSUSE Tumbleweed distribution built on it, which uses a rolling release cycle for software updates. Package builds in Factory will be conducted for the x86-64-v2 architecture, while official support for the x86-64-v1 and i586 architectures will be discontinued.
The second version of the x86-64 microarchitecture has been supported by processors since around 2009 (starting with Intel Nehalem) and features extensions such as SSE3, SSE4_2, SSSE3, POPCNT, LAHF-SAHF, and CMPXCHG16B. For owners of older x86-64 processors lacking the necessary capabilities, a separate repository openSUSE:Factory:LegacyX86 is planned, which will be maintained by volunteers. As for 32-bit packages, a full repository for the i586 architecture will be discontinued, but a small portion necessary for wine operation will remain.
