Red Hat has released a stable version of the Cygwin 3.4.0 package, which includes a DLL library for emulating the basic Linux API in Windows, allowing Linux programs to be compiled with minimal changes. The package also includes standard Unix utilities, server applications, compilers, libraries, and header files built to run in Windows.
This release is notable for dropping support for 32-bit installations and the WoW64 layer used to run 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows. Support has also been discontinued for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. In the next branch (3.5), support for Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012 is planned to be dropped. Thus, Cygwin 3.5.0 will support only Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2022.
Other changes:
- Support for Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) has been implemented, which is enabled by default in the Cygwin DLL.
- The specialized handler for files with the '.com' extension has been removed.
- Code has been added to handle the setrlimit(RLIMIT_AS) call.
- Code has been added to handle signal masks in /proc//status.
- Handlers for UDP socket options UDP_SEGMENT and UDP_GRO have been added.
- By default, the option 'CYGWIN=pipe_byte' is set, under which unnamed pipes operate in byte mode rather than message-passing mode.
- In the input functions defined in the stdio.h header file, attempts to read past end-of-file (EOF) have been disabled to approximate Linux behavior.
- Specifying an empty path in the PATH environment variable is now interpreted as referencing the current directory, which corresponds to behavior in Linux.
- The default values for FD_SETSIZE and NOFILE have been changed to 1024 and 3200.
