The release of the OpenIndiana 2022.10 open-source distribution has been published, which replaces the binary distribution of OpenSolaris, the development of which was halted by Oracle. OpenIndiana provides users with a working environment built on a fresh slice of the Illumos project's codebase. The development of OpenSolaris technologies continues through the Illumos project, which develops the kernel, network stack, file systems, drivers, as well as a basic set of user system utilities and libraries. Three types of ISO images have been created for download — server edition with console applications (1 GB), minimal build (435 MB), and a build with MATE graphical environment (2 GB).
Key Changes:
- Initial support for mounting the installation media via NFS has been added.
- Proprietary NVIDIA drivers have been updated.
- The LibreOffice office suite has been updated to version 7.2.7 and is now available in 64-bit versions.
- Firefox and Thunderbird have been updated to the latest ESR branches.
- The MATE desktop environment has been updated to version 1.26.
- Old versions of Perl have been removed, replaced by 64-bit packages with Perl 5.34 and 5.36 branches (by default).
- The process of removing old versions of Python 2.7 and 3.5 has begun but is not yet finished. The IPS package manager has been transitioned to use Python 3.9.
- The GCC 10 branch has been updated and packages with GCC 11 and Clang 13 have been added.
