Joshua Strobl, the key developer of the Budgie project, has published a proposal to start the creation of official Fedora Linux Spin releases featuring the Budgie desktop environment. A Budgie SIG group has been established to manage Budgie packages and create the new release. Fedora's Spin edition featuring Budgie is planned for release starting with Fedora Linux 38. The proposal has not yet been reviewed by the FESCo (Fedora Engineering Steering Committee), which is responsible for the technical aspects of Fedora's distribution development.
Initially, the Budgie environment was focused on use in the Solus distribution, but then transformed into a distribution-independent project, which also began to distribute packages for Arch Linux and Ubuntu. The Ubuntu Budgie edition gained official status in 2016, but Budgie's use in Fedora did not receive proper attention, and official packages for Fedora began to be provided only starting with Fedora 37. Budgie is based on GNOME technologies and its own implementation of the GNOME Shell (in the next Budgie 11 branch, they plan to separate the desktop functionality from the layer providing visualization and information output, which will allow for abstraction from specific graphical toolkits and libraries, and implement full support for the Wayland protocol).
The Budgie Window Manager (BWM), which is an enhanced modification of the basic Mutter plugin, is used for window management in Budgie. The core of Budgie consists of a panel that is organized similarly to classic desktop panels. All panel elements are applets, allowing flexible composition, repositioning, and replacement of basic panel elements to suit individual preferences.
