GTK library developers have announced the addition of a grid icon view for displaying directory contents in the dialog used for file selection in applications. By default, the classic list view will continue to be used, and a separate button has been added on the right side of the panel for switching to the icon mode. This functionality has been made possible 18 years after the proposal was published, thanks to the unification of the data model for the GtkListView and GtkGridView widgets. The change is expected to be implemented in upcoming versions of GTK and GNOME.
