Employees of Canonical have disclosed information about the ubuntu-mini-iso project, which is developing a new minimalist build of Ubuntu, sized at around 140 MB. The main idea of the new installation image is to make it universal, allowing the installation of any officially supported Ubuntu version.
The project is being developed by Dan Bungert, who maintains the Subiquity installer. A working prototype of the build has already been prepared and tested, and work is underway to mobilize the official Ubuntu infrastructure for the build. The new version is expected to be released alongside the spring release of Ubuntu 23.04. This build can be used for CD/USB recording or for dynamic booting via UEFI HTTP. It offers a text menu from which users can select the desired Ubuntu edition, the installation image for which will be loaded into memory. Information about the available builds will be dynamically retrieved using simplestreams.
