Linux From Scratch 11.3 and Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.3 have been released.

New editions of the guides Linux From Scratch 11.3 (LFS) and Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.3 (BLFS) have been presented, along with LFS and BLFS versions featuring the system manager systemd. Linux From Scratch provides instructions for building a basic Linux system from scratch using only the source texts of the required software. Beyond Linux From Scratch supplements the LFS instructions with information on building and configuring around 1000 software packages covering various applications, from database systems and server systems to graphical interfaces and media players.

In Linux From Scratch 11.3, the transition to glibc 2.37, binutils 2.40, and Linux kernel 6.1.11 has been carried out, along with Systemd 252, SysVinit 3.06, Bash 5.2.15, Grep 3.8, Inetutils 2.4, Meson 1.0.0, Openssl 3.0.8, Python 3.11.2, Tcl 8.6.13, and Vim 9.0.1273. Bugs in the boot scripts have been fixed, and editorial work has been done on the explanatory materials throughout the book.

Beyond Linux From Scratch 11.3 marks 1357 updates, including GNOME 43, Xfce 4.18, KDE Plasma 5.26.5, KDE Gears 22.12.2, LibreOffice 7.5, Fmpeg 5.1.2, Inkscape 1.2.2, Thunderbird 102.8.0, Firefox 102.8.0, SeaMonkey 2.53.15, IceWM 3.3.1, openbox 3.6.1, Mesa 22.3.5, GTK 4.8.3, MariaDB 10.6.12, PostgreSQL 15.2, Postfix 3.7.4, Exim 4.96, BIND 9.18.12, Apache httpd 2.4.55, and more. The intel-media-driver (Intel Media Driver for VAAPI) has been added for hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding of video on systems with Intel Broadwell CPUs and newer models.

In addition to LFS and BLFS, several additional books have been released within the project:

• ‘Automated Linux From Scratch’ — a framework for automating the building of LFS systems and managing packages;
• ‘Cross Linux From Scratch’ — a description of cross-platform building of LFS systems, supporting architectures: x86, x86_64, sparc, mips, PowerPC, alpha, hppa, arm;
• ‘Hardened Linux From Scratch’ — instructions for increasing the security of LFS, applying additional patches and restrictions;
• ‘LFS Hints’ — a collection of additional tips with descriptions of alternative solutions for the steps described in LFS and BLFS.
