The release of Proxmox Virtual Environment 7.4 has been published, a specialized Linux distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux, aimed at deploying and maintaining virtual servers using LXC and KVM, and capable of serving as a replacement for products such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix Hypervisor. The size of the installation ISO image is 1.1 GB.
Proxmox VE provides tools for deploying a fully functional industrial-grade virtual server system, managed through a web interface designed for handling hundreds or even thousands of virtual machines. The distribution includes built-in tools for organizing backups of virtual environments and offers out-of-the-box clustering support, including the ability to migrate virtual environments from one node to another without downtime. Features of the web interface include: support for secure VNC console; role-based access management to all available objects (VM, storage, nodes, etc.); and support for various authentication mechanisms (MS ADS, LDAP, Linux PAM, Proxmox VE authentication).
In the new release:
- Improvements in the web interface:
- The ability to enable a dark theme has been implemented.
- In the tree view of resources, guest systems can now be sorted by name, not just by VMID.
- Detailed information about Ceph OSD (Object Storage Daemon) is now displayed in the web interface and API.
- The ability to download task execution logs in the form of text files has been added.
- Enhanced editing capabilities for tasks related to backups.
- Support for adding local storage types residing on other nodes of the cluster has been provided.
- An interface for node selection has been added to the storage addition wizard for ZFS, LVM, and LVM-Thin-based storages.
- Automatic redirection of HTTP connections to HTTPS has been ensured.
- The translation of the interface into Russian has been improved.
- Development of the Cluster Resource Scheduling (CRS) has continued, which searches for new nodes necessary for high availability. The new version adds the ability for automatic rebalancing of virtual machines and containers at startup, not just during recovery.
- The High Availability Manager (HA Manager) has added the CRM command for manually transitioning the active node to maintenance mode without requiring a reboot. In preparation for the implementation of dynamic load balancing in the cluster, resource unification (CPU, memory) of various HA services has been conducted, virtual machines, containers).
- An option "content-dirs" has been added to the storage to override the content type in certain subdirectories (for example, ISO images, container templates, backups, guest system disks, etc.).
- The calculation of ACL has been redesigned, significantly improving the performance of access control rules processing on systems with a very large number of users or extensive ACL lists.
- The option to disable notifications about package updates has been provided.
- The installation ISO image now allows you to select the time zone during installation to simplify synchronization for geographically dispersed hosts or clusters.
- Support for riscv32 and riscv64 architectures has been added in LXC containers.
- The versions of systems in container templates for the amd64 architecture have been updated.
- Synchronization with the Debian 11.6 package base has been completed. By default, Linux kernel 5.15 is offered, with version 6.2 available optionally. Updated versions of QEMU 7.2, LXC 5.0.2, ZFS 2.1.9, Ceph Quincy 17.2.5, and Ceph Pacific 16.2.11 have been made.
