The members of the technical committee overseeing the development of Ubuntu have approved the inclusion of the Ubuntu Cinnamon distribution, featuring the Cinnamon desktop environment, as an official edition of Ubuntu. At this stage, integration with the Ubuntu infrastructure has begun, forming test builds of Ubuntu Cinnamon, and efforts are underway to organize quality control testing. If no serious issues are found, Ubuntu Cinnamon will officially become part of the offerings starting with the release of Ubuntu 23.04.
The Cinnamon desktop environment is developed by the community of the Linux Mint distribution and is a fork of the GNOME Shell interface, Nautilus file manager, and Mutter window manager, aiming to provide a classic GNOME 2 style environment with successful interaction elements from GNOME Shell. Cinnamon is based on GNOME components, but these components are delivered as a periodically synchronized fork, independent of external dependencies on GNOME. The default setup of Ubuntu Cinnamon includes external applications such as LibreOffice, Thunderbird, Rhythmbox, GIMP, Celluloid, gThumb, GNOME Software, and Timeshift.
