The release of package ppp 2.5.0 has been published, implementing support for the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), which allows establishing an IPv4/IPv6 communication channel using connections through serial ports or point-to-point connections (for example, dial-up). The package includes the background process pppd, used for negotiating connections, authentication, and configuring the network interface, as well as auxiliary utilities pppstats and pppdump. The project code is distributed under the BSD license. Official support for Linux and Solaris is provided in the package (without support, code is available for NeXTStep, FreeBSD, SunOS 4.x, SVR4, Tru64, AIX, and Ultrix).
The previous significant branch, ppp 2.4.0, was released in 2000. The substantial increase in version number is due to changes that break compatibility with pppd plugins and a complete overhaul of the build system. Among the improvements:
- Support for the PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol) authentication protocol has been added.
- Support for loading files with certificates and keys in PKCS12 format has been introduced.
- A build environment based on GNU Autoconf and Automake has been proposed. Support for pkgconfig has been added.
- The API for developing pppd plugins has been significantly revamped.
- Support for the IPX protocol has been discontinued.
- Installation of the pppd executable with the suid root flag has been discontinued.
- New options ipv6cp-noremote, ipv6cp-nosend, ipv6cp-use-remotenumber, ipv6-up-script, ipv6-down-script, show-options, usepeerwins, ipcp-no-address, ipcp-no-addresses, and nosendip have been added to pppd.
- On the Linux platform, the ability to set any supported data transmission speed for the serial port has been provided.
