The release of Chrome OS 112 is now available, based on the Linux kernel, with the upstart system manager, ebuild/portage build tools, open components, and Chrome 112 web browser. The user environment of Chrome OS is limited to the web browser, and instead of standard applications, web apps are used; however, Chrome OS includes a full multi-window interface, desktop, and taskbar. The source code is distributed under the Apache 2.0 open license. The Chrome OS 112 build is available for most current models of Chromebook. A version of Chrome OS Flex is offered for use on regular computers.
Key changes in Chrome OS 112:
- The quick settings menu has been updated, featuring larger button sizes and grouping similar functions to simplify navigation. A separate notifications panel has been added, with an indicator shown to the left of the date. A parameter 'chrome://flags#qs-revamp' has been proposed for enabling the new menu.
- A password recovery option has been provided, based on the online process for restoring access to a Google account. To use the recovery feature, this function must be explicitly enabled in the settings (Security / Sign-in / Local data recovery).
- The Screencast app, which allows recording and viewing videos reflecting screen content, has added the ability to create transcriptions of speech in languages other than English.
- A section for viewing and removing saved devices that were previously paired has been added to the fast device pairing (Fast Pair) settings.
