The release of the proprietary browser Vivaldi 6.0 has been announced, developed on the Chromium engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, Android, and macOS. The changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser's interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various pre-built NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source code, but under a proprietary license.
The browser is developed by former Opera Presto developers and aims to create a customizable and functional browser that preserves user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history, and bookmark managers, a private browsing mode, synchronization, secured with end-to-end encryption, a tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, a horizontal tab display mode, as well as a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar in beta mode.
In the new release:
- The ability to create custom icon sets for the browser's interface buttons, enhancing the personalization capabilities of the browser. This feature is available in the Vivaldi theme settings. At the same time, the developers announced a competition for the best icon set for Vivaldi.
- Support for workspaces, allowing easy grouping of large arrays of open tabs into separate thematic spaces. After that, switching between work and personal tabs can be done with a single click.
- In the Vivaldi mail client, the ability to drag and drop messages between views and folders has been added.
- Editing capabilities for the Android platform have been expanded in the browser.
