The developers of the Thunderbird email client have released the financial report for 2022. Over the year, the project received donations totaling $6.4 million (with $1.5 million raised in 2019, $2.3 million in 2020, and $2.8 million in 2021), allowing it to continue its successful independent development.
The project's expenses amounted to $3.569 million (with $1.5 million in 2020 and $1.984 million in 2021), and almost all (79.8%) were related to personnel costs. Currently, 24 employees are working on the project (15 in 2020 and 20 in 2021). Administration accounted for 6.9% of the spending, while marketing made up 0.3%. Other expenses were associated with professional services (such as staffing agencies), tax management, and agreements with Mozilla (for example, payment for access to build infrastructure).
Current statistics indicate about 8-9 million active Thunderbird users per day and 17 million active users per month (similar figures were recorded a year ago). 95% of users utilize Thunderbird on the Windows platform, 4% on macOS, and 1% on Linux.
