Sourceware Free Projects Hosting has joined the Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC), which provides legal protection for free projects, advocates for compliance with the GPL license, and collects sponsorship funds.
The SFC allows participants to focus on the development process by taking on the roles of collecting donations. The SFC also becomes the owner of the project's assets and relieves developers of personal liability in case of legal disputes. For those donating, the SFC organization enables tax deductions, as it falls into the favorable tax category. Projects developed with the support of the SFC include Git, Wine, Samba, QEMU, OpenWrt, CoreBoot, Mercurial, Boost, OpenChange, BusyBox, Godot, Inkscape, uCLibc, Homebrew, and about a dozen other free projects.
Since 1998, the Sourceware project has provided open projects with a platform for hosting and related services, including mailing list management, hosting git repositories, bug tracking (bugzilla), patch reviewing (patchwork), build testing (buildbot), and release distribution. The Sourceware infrastructure is used for the distribution and development of projects such as GCC, Glibc, GDB, Binutils, Cygwin, LVM2, elfutils, bzip2, SystemTap, and Valgrind. Joining the SFC is expected to attract new volunteers for hosting work and garner funds for upgrading and developing Sourceware's infrastructure.
To interact with the SFC, Sourceware has formed a governing committee consisting of 7 representatives. According to the agreement reached, to eliminate conflicts of interest, no more than two members connected to the same company or organization may be present on the committee (previously, the main contributions to supporting Sourceware were made by employees of Red Hat, which also provided equipment for the project, hindering the attraction of other sponsors and causing disputes about the excessive dependency of the service on one company).
