The Institute of System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISP RAS) has formed a consortium aimed at organizing cooperation among Russian companies, educational institutions, and research institutes in the field of Linux kernel security research and addressing identified vulnerabilities. The consortium was established on the basis of the Technology Center for Operating System Security Research, which was founded in 2021, focusing on systems built on the Linux kernel.
The establishment of the consortium is expected to eliminate duplication of efforts in security research, promote the adoption of secure development principles, attract additional participants to work on kernel security, and strengthen the ongoing efforts of the Technology Center to identify and address vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel. As for the work already done, 154 fixes prepared by the staff of the Technology Center have been accepted into the core.
In addition to identifying and addressing vulnerabilities, the Technology Center is also working on establishing the Russian branch of the Linux kernel (based on kernel 5.10, with code in git) and synchronizing it with the main Linux kernel, developing tools for static, dynamic, and architectural analysis of the kernel, creating testing methods for the kernel and formulating recommendations for secure operating system development based on the Linux kernel. Partners of the Technology Center include companies such as 'Bazalt SPO', 'Baikal Electronics', NTC 'Module', 'MCST', 'NPPTK', 'Open Mobile Platform', 'RED SOFT', 'RusBITech-Astra', 'NTC IT ROSTA', 'FINTECH', and 'YANDEX.CLOUD'.
