After more than a year of development, the Pharo 11 release has been published, which develops the Smalltalk programming language dialect. Pharo is a branch of the Squeak project, in which Alan Kay, the author of Smalltalk, participated. In addition to implementing the programming language, Pharo also provides a virtual machine for executing code, an integrated development environment, a debugger, and a set of libraries, including libraries for developing graphical interfaces. The project's code is distributed under the MIT license.
Among the changes in the new release:
- The toolset capabilities have been expanded: In the Iceberg Git client, integration with GitHub has been improved, the debugger now supports adding bindings to the interaction model, a new user interface has been proposed for the profiler, the Rewrite utility has been redesigned, a new document viewer utility has been added, dependency visualization has been implemented in Calypso, and inspection utilities have been enhanced.
- The implementation of ephemerons, a structure that can be linked to other objects without creating references that hinder garbage collection, and which allows tracking object processing by the garbage collector, has been finalized for general use.
- Support for cascading slot declaration has been added.
- An API for reflecting AST nodes in OCBytecodeToASTCache, RBMethodNode, and RBBlockNode has been added.
- A parse plugin has been added to the OpalCompiler.
- In virtual machine Memory layout has been improved, and initial support for SIMD (Single-Instruction Multiple-Data) instructions and vector registers has been added.
