The release of the Pale Moon 32.3 web browser has been published. This version, which diverged from the Firefox codebase, aims to provide greater efficiency, maintain a classic interface, minimize memory consumption, and offer additional customization options. Pale Moon builds are available for Windows and Linux (x86_64). The project code is distributed under the MPLv2 (Mozilla Public License).
The project adheres to a classic interface organization, without transitioning to the integrated Australis and Photon interfaces in Firefox 29 and 57, and provides extensive customization capabilities. Removed components include DRM, Social API, WebRTC, PDF viewer, Crash Reporter, code for collecting statistics, parental control tools, and accessibility features. Compared to Firefox, the browser reintroduces support for extensions using XUL and maintains the ability to apply both full and lightweight themes.
In the new version:
- A hidden setting "browser.history.menuMaxResults" has been added to about:config, allowing you to specify the number of history entries displayed in the menu (by default, 15 entries are shown).
- In development across all platforms, a transition to using the C++14 standard has been made. Preparations for transitioning to the C++17 standard have been completed.
- Work has been done to improve compatibility with other browsers and resolve issues with popular websites. For example, support for calculating colors using the CSS function calc(), the findLast and findLastIndex array methods, the Object.hasOwn(object, property) property, and additional methods in the Intl API (hourCycle, DateTimeFormat, Intl.Locale) has been added.
- Cleanup of unused code has been carried out.
- Support for experimental Mozilla extensions has been discontinued.
- Improvements have been made to the garbage collector in the JavaScript engine.
- Handling of symbolic links in directory listing has been discontinued.
